Barent DeWitt and Sarah Van
Tassel:
Barent b. 18 Jan 1666 Netherlands d. aft. 1723 Raritan, New Jersey
Sarah b. 1670 New York d. prob. NJ
Barent and wife, Sarah, lived at
Tarrytown, NY, being members of the Sleepy Hollow Dutch Reformed Church, where
we find records of the baptism of several of their children. This church was
also known as the Philipsburgh Church, Philipsburgh being named for Frederick
Philips, who owned the land upon which the town was built.
Between 1709,
the last appearance of his name in Tarrytown, and 1710, Bernard, (at this point
in the paper M.E. Wood changes his name to Bernard), DeWitt removed with his
family to Hunterdon County, New Jersey, settling on the Raritan River. This part
of Hunterdon later became Somerset County. A Dutch Reformed Church was
established here in 1710, Bernard DeWitt being elected, at its organization, the
senior Deacon.
It is not known when or where Bernard and his wife Sarah
died, but it was probably at their old home near Somerville. No gravestones mark
their last resting place, nor is there any will or administration account found
to be on file.

................3.
Paulus DeWitt baptized at Readington Church Hunterdon Co., New Jersey 1/24/1728.
He may have been the Paul DeWitt who had wife Mary------, and died in Sussex Co.
NJ 1772. Or the Paul DeWitt who was of Deer Park Church in1751, whose wife was
Catherine Depui. Owing to the frequent repetition of this Christian name, we
cannot at this writing identify him with any degree of accuracy. Most
researchers feel that this Paul is the one who married Catherine Depui. I am
inserting Church records recording the marriage of Paul and Catherine Depui
(Depuy) as futher proof that this Paul is the son of Paul son of Barent.
"Marriage of Pauwell
DeWitt, young man, born Raretan (Rariton, Hunterdon Co.,
now Somerset New Jersey) married 12/10/1749, Catherina DePuy, young woman, born
in Esopus, both dwelling in Palingskill." I also have children for Paul
and
Catherine but will not include them in this writing as I am trying to
just include the information given by M.E. Wood at this
point.

His wife may have been Sarah------; went first to
Bald Eagle with his parents, but before 1774, had settled in Bedford County, PA
in that part now included in Huntington Co., PA. He no doubt died before 1790,
as we do not find him in the census of that year for PA, VA or SC. 5. Sara
